By numbers alone Bonds is unquestionably the best player of this era. His only statistical peer is Babe Ruth. He holds the MLB single-season records for OBP and slugging percentage. He and Leyland are friends, and Dombrowski has done enough in player signings to get a minor reputation for thumbing his nose at suggestions from the Commissioners office. When the Giants didn't offer him a contract, I got the impression that the Tigers would have signed him if Sheffield hadn't been blocking him at DH. It may be a million-to-one chance, but it isn't entirely implausable.

Ahh, Music to my ears. As far as I'm concerned, Bonds is the greatest player I have ever seen. I'm not going to go into all the steroid stuff here, but I would be a huge fan of the move you speak of. You need a LH hitter? There might still be none better than Bonds and he's still available. Do I think it could happen? No, I don't, but it would be nice.

It would make Mr. Selig very unhappy, but the man the Tigers ought to sign is Barry Bonds. He still wants to play and he still can, plus he gets along well with Leyland. He's not a particularly nice person, but its hard to demonize him when it has become abundantly clear how many others were doing the same things. There is no reason for this informal banning. In '07 when last he played his OPS was an ungodly 1.145, the only guy hitting like that today is Pujols. Plus, if he was able to DH regularly he would probably get his 3,000th hit in September.
