Twins Turn Up Heat on Tigers

by 2009 Season

Detroit 0, Minnesota 3 (box)

Magic Number 13

Things just got interesting.  The Twins pitching staff held the Tigers to just five hits in beating the division leaders for the eighth time in 12 tries this season.  Detroit has now lost 8 of its last 11 games.

Micheal Cuddyer homered and Jason Kubel scored twice, all against Rick Porcello, who fell to 13-9 after allowing all three Twins’ runs over his six frames.  Brian Duensing improved to 4-1 with his 6.2 shutout innings.

The Tigers got two hits apiece from Marcus Thames and Curtis Granderson, and an infield hit from Brandon Inge.  That’s it.

Carl Pavano gets the ball for Minnesota as the Twins look to get within two games this afternoon.  Pavano is 4-0 with a 1.48 ERA in four starts against Detroit this season.  Justin Verlander will make his third attempt at win no. 17, as he opposes Pavano today.

It is not yet time to hit the panic button, but it may be time to start to see if you can dig one up.  Another loss today would put a whole lot of pressure on the Tigers and Nate Robertson on Sunday.

John, If the collapse actually happens, I believe in all sincerity that Ilitch ought to consider the possibility of firing both DD and Leyland. The only decent trade DD has made in the last few years is the Cabrera one, and even that one is 50% garbage. He traded a potential top of the rotation pitcher in Jurjjens for a statue named Renteria, gave that manic depressive Willis a ludicrous 3 year extension, and now it looks like his 2 late season deals this year are a total waste, neither of whom is likely to return to Detroit, so in essence, he gave away 3 promising young players and got zip in return. To hell with DD. The bloom is definitely off his rose.

The Tigers are a house of cards on the verge of a cataclysmic collapse. The starting pitching is a mess and their offense is non-existent. I no longer trust DD to make good trades, nor do I trust Leyland to make good managerial decisions. They're gutless, timid, and play baseball as if they're afraid to win. The Tigers are finished for '09. I'd like to be proven wrong, but I don't think I will be.

Jeez, Bob, tell us how you really feel. In all seriousness though, I can see your points. We all knew that these last two weeks would determine the outcome of the division. Of course you would have expected that the Tigers would have done better against the Royals and Blue Jays before hand, but what's done is done.

The biggest problem is that the Tigers sold out to win this season, not only by allowing Magglio's option to vest, but with the trades for Huff and Washburn. If they do not make the playoffs, there's no additional income to help offset next year's payroll.

I hope you're wrong as well, Bob, but I can't say as I am overly confident about that.
