Thursday Thoughts: Lee, Hinske, Tribe

AUTHOR: John Parent | IN: 2009 Playoffs, 2009-10 Hot Stove | COMMENTS: 3 Comments

Not much going on in the Tigersphere these days as we have to wait much longer than usual to start the Hot Stove season.  That makes for a shorter offseason, though, so no complaints from me.  Less time without actual baseball games makes for a better year.  Here are a few things I have found interesting in the postseason so far.

Eric Hinske is at it again.  You may recall that back in June I called for a trade that would bring Hinske to Detroit.  Alas, the Yankees pulled the trigger on a deal with Pittsburgh and now Hinske has been a part of [...]

Tigers Express Interest in Chapman

AUTHOR: John Parent | IN: Detroit Tigers | COMMENTS: None Yet

Aroldis Chapman dazzled viewers of the most recent World Baseball Classic with his smooth left handed delivery and his sizzling 100 MPH fastball.  The Cuban defector is now shopping his services to the clubs of the Major Leagues.

It was expected that the usual suspects would be involved, and they are.  The Yankees hosted Chapman during Game Six of the ALCS.  Boston, Baltimore, and the White Sox have also shown interest, as have the Cardinals and Mets.

And now, you can add the Detroit Tigers to the list of interested parties.  As first reported by Melissa Segura of SI.com, the team has [...]

BBA MVP Ballot

AUTHOR: John Parent | IN: 2009 Season, 2009 Season Awards | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Baseball Bloggers Alliance has announced the winners of three major awards following the 2009 season.  The last remaining award is the most valuable player in each league.

Although Tigers Tracks was not able to cast an official ballot in the first three polls, I will be submitting my MVP vote for the American League.  Much thanks to Joe Dexter from Motor City Bengals for making this happen.

As per voting guidelines, I will only be voting in the league that I cover, so this is an AL only ballot.  Voting will be finished by Monday, October 26, and the winners will [...]

By The Numbers: Ron LeFlore

AUTHOR: John Parent | IN: History | COMMENTS: None Yet

Since the 1931 season, the Detroit Tigers uniforms have featured numbers assigned to each player.  Our “By The Numbers” series takes a look at the best, or sometimes just the most interesting, player to wear each number.  We have reached number 8 in our series, if you would like to catch up on the first seven, click the “By The Numbers” tag at the top of this page.
As always, when I begin one of these profiles, I go back through the years using Baseball-Almanac and find the players to consider.  Off the top of my head, I usually have a [...]

Tigers Need Upgrade at Short

AUTHOR: John Parent | IN: 2009-10 Hot Stove, Roster Rumblings | COMMENTS: None Yet

There is a lot of talk about whether or not Detroit should try to bring Placido Polanco back for another season at second base.  Regardless of what they decide to do, and I’ll bet that Polly is playing elsewhere in 2010, the best area for potential upgrade is at shortstop.

When Adam Everett was signed to man short prior to last season, the Tigers needed an upgrade defensively.  Everett was exactly who we thought he was, a slick fielder with no bat.  His defense help solidify the infield and helped the Tigers surprise many a folk by staying in the race [...]

Tracking the Tigersphere

AUTHOR: John Parent | IN: 2009 Season Awards, 2009-10 Hot Stove, Tiger Notes | COMMENTS: None Yet

All is quiet on the Tiger front over the past few days.  The League Championship Series finally kicked off last night in the NL while the AL gets started tonight.  In the meantime, let me bring you up to speed on what’s going on around the web.

In case you missed it, or just haven’t found the heart to head that way, the Detroit Tigers Den is now up and running on the FanHuddle Network.  The Den consists of work by Austin Drake and yours truly.  Austin and I have been piecing together a full review of the 2009 season which should [...]

BBA Awards: Rookie of the Year

AUTHOR: Joe Dexter | IN: Detroit Tigers | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

As a proud member of the Baseball Bloggers Alliance, I am gladly ready to submit my vote for the Rookie of the Year in the American League. Usually when the season unwinds, there is always one clear cut favorite for the award. There is one rookie that steps up his game better than any of his young rookie peers. This season, there are so many names to choose from. Matt Wieters, Elvis Andrus, Nolan Riemold, Gordan Becham, and Brett Gardner are options as fielders. Meanwhile, the pitching in the American League has been so talented from rookies, that in [...]

Assessing Dombrowski, Leyland

AUTHOR: John Parent | IN: 2009 Season, 2009-10 Hot Stove | COMMENTS: None Yet

Twitter is a wonderful thing, isn’t it?  Upon opening up my browser this morning I saw a tweet from Greg Eno who directed his followers to an article on Mlive.com where Bill Simonson absolutely raked Jim Leyland over the coals.  Simonson called for accountability and questioned why Leyland is so revered.

Recently, on this very site,  there was a similar discussion going on in the comments.  Bob offered his outrage over Leyland and Dave Dombrowski and while my first inclination was to disagree, the more I considered his points, the less I could argue.

The truth is, I have taken time and considered [...]
