Call me a lunatic, but I am actually hoping they give Zumaya a chance to close this spring. I know his health is always a question mark, but he is still quite young and could have a long career ahead of him. The bullpen is better when Zumaya is healthy and I think he is a much stronger candidate to close than Perry. Maybe just wishful thinking though.

I'm perfectly ok with the Tigers saying so long to Polanco. He's had a nice 4 years with them, but it's time to see what Sizemore can offer. I certainly don't want them to sign a multi year deal with a 34 year old player. The Tigers will emerge in 2011 with a lot of really bad contracts off the books, and they don't need another one. I really don't expect Lyon or Rodney to accept arbitration, so it appears likely (barring a trade) that Zumaya or Perry might compete for the closers job. It should be an interesting spring training.

Chris- What you read is true in that the Red Sox would get a first round pick plus a sandwich pick if Bay signs elsewhere. Then if they sign Holliday, the Sox lose their first round choice to the Cardinals who also get a sandwich pick. The sandwich picks are not taken from teams, however, they are simply "created" by MLB. So if Bay signs with St. Louis and Holliday signs with Boston, the clubs would swap first-round choices and both clubs would also get a sandwich pick as well. It is a silly system; word is that it will be adjusted in the next collective bargaining agreement.
