Detroit Tigers on the Brink of Landing Joaquin Benoit

Fox Sports’ Jon Paul Morosi is reporting that the Tigers are nearing a deal with free agent reliever Joaquin Benoit.

Benoit put up impressive numbers as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays bullpen last year. He missed the 2009 season due to a torn rotator cuff but came back to have the best year of his career in 2010. Benoit was initially a part of the Texas Rangers’ organization and made 55 starts for them between 2001 and 2005 before the Rangers made him a full time reliever in 2006.

MCB readers should have had Benoit on their radar following last week’s post that broke down the free agency predictions from MLB Trade Rumors. Benoit was pegged for the Tigers by MLBTR expert Mark Polishuk, who also predicted the Tigers to land Jayson Werth, Victor Martinez and Magglio Ordonez.
