The struggles at the plate continue for Detroit’s top position-player prospect, Nick Castellanos. He hit his first professional home run this week, but he’s still hitting under the Mendoza line, his power hasn’t shown up, and he racking up strikeouts at an alarming rate (he’s struck out in 32% of his at-bats). We’re still a long way from giving up on him though. At just 19 years old, he’s young for the Midwest League.

Andy Oliver was originally scheduled to make a start last night (his second of the week), but his start was pushed back to Monday due to soreness in his hand caused by playing with a slingshot.

That’s why Castellanos isn’t expected to be MLB ready ’til 2014. Much like Garcia & Fields we need to relax a bit with Nick. Give them some time before we the fans demand results. It’s a BIG jump from high school to Low-A or Advanced-A professional ball. When I saw Nick this spring, his swing and size for that matter suggests that the power will come around. He hits a ton of hard line drives!

Y’all might consider dropping Drew Smyly and adding SS Gustavo Nunez, RP Lester Oliveros and C Rob Brantly. Just my opinion… But hey what do I know about minor league baseball. ;)

Take some pics for me next time y’all go to WM.
