Yankees’ Jeter to Skip All-Star Game, Jhonny Peralta Next in Line?

Word is trickling through twitter this afternoon that New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter will bow out of the All-Star Game next week, citing a need to rest his recent injury.

No official announcement has yet been made as to who might replace Jeter on the roster but if Ron Washington decides he needs another shortstop, there’s one in Detroit that would be a pretty good fit. Jhonny Peralta is batting .310 with 14 homers and 49 RBI this year and many felt he should have gotten the call ahead of Cleveland’s Asdrubal Cabrera for the back-up spot in the first place.

Texas’ Elvis Andrus remains a possibility for Washington’s pick, however, as all-star managers have a history of taking plenty of their own guys with them to the game. Andrus plays stellar defense and great speed as evidenced by his 25 stolen bases this year. His .278/.330/.347 line doesn’t compare favorably to Peralta’s but I still wouldn’t be shocked if Jhonny was snubbed yet again.
