Tigers Designate David Purcey for Assignment

Well, I think it’s safe to say the Oakland Athletics won the David Purcey for Scott Sizemore trade, eh?

This afternoon the Detroit Tigers designated for assignment the contract of left handed reliever David Purcey. The move was made in order to clear roster space for newly-acquired reliever David Pauley. I’d say we hardly knew Purcey, but the reality is that we knew him all too well.

Purcey, who came to the Tigers in the above-mentioned deal on May 27, was designated once already this year, by the Blue Jays before they dealt him to the A’s in April. In the 19 games in which he appeared for the Tigers, Purcey worked 18.2 innings and issued an alarming 20 walks. Opponents also hit him at a .296/.451/.437/.887 clip. His ERA during his time in Detroit was 7.23.

In making this move today, Dave Dombrowski is doing what’s best for the club. Continuing to use Purcey in any role is a detriment to the fortunes of the team. Dombrowski, despite what I’m sure is some level of embarrassment given the trade of a former top prospect to get the southpaw, has at least stopped the bleeding.
