According to a Tweet by MLive’s Chris Iott, the Detroit Tigers have released outfielder Brennan Boesch.

It’s kind of surprising that the Tigers would go through the whole process of tendering an arbitration offer, coming to a contract agreement, and beginning spring training before deciding just to cut ties. My guess is that they hoped they could move him for something even marginal in return in a trade but found that there weren’t any takers for such a deal.

The move will free up a spot on the 40-man roster that they could use to add someone like Don Kelly or Kevin Russo or even Nick Castellanos.
