Video: Alex Avila’s Ninth Inning Home Run

Despite a hot stretch since the All Star Break (.302/.362/.605) Alex Avila hasn’t had a fantastic year at the plate, but he has nonetheless delivered in some big spots this season. Monday night was one of those times. Trailing 2-1 in the ninth inning against Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez, Avila hit a deep fly ball to left-center that would change the outcome of the game.

Here’s the video of the hit that includes the call of the play by both Mario Impemba and Dan Dickerson:

Avila’s batting line is still just .199/.293/.349, but his bat (in the absence of Jhonny Peralta and everything) may ultimately be one of the keys for the Tigers down the stretch and in the playoffs.

I know I’ve been critical of Jim Price in the past, but my favorite part of this is the call on the radio end where Price is literally LOLing at the Indians misfortune.
