Despite a hot stretch since the All Star Break (.302/.362/.605) Alex Avila hasn’t had a fantastic year at the plate, but he has nonetheless delivered in some big spots this season. Monday night was one of those times. Trailing 2-1 in the ninth inning against Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez, Avila hit a deep fly ball to left-center that would change the outcome of the game.

Here’s the video of the hit that includes the call of the play by both Mario Impemba and Dan Dickerson:

Avila’s batting line is still just .199/.293/.349, but his bat (in the absence of Jhonny Peralta and everything) may ultimately be one of the keys for the Tigers down the stretch and in the playoffs.
