Detroit Tigers to Call Up Nick Castellanos, Danny Worth, and Evan Reed on Sunday

Rosters officially expand at midnight (an entire 40-man roster could be active if a team wanted it that way), and John Wagner of the Toledo Blade is reporting that three more more Detroit Tigers minor league players will be called up. One of them of particular interest to the majority of the fan base.

Nick Castellanos, the top hitting prospect in the organization for a number of years now, will don the big league uniform for the first time in the regular season on Monday. There’s no word on whether or not he’ll start, or how much he’ll play, but Jim Leyland doesn’t like to have extra hangers on around the clubhouse, so the fact that he’s getting the call means that he’ll be given an opportunity to make his case for the postseason roster. He’s not needed to provide emergency depth in September — they have plenty of outfielders, and no, he won’t play any third base — so he’s going to be here to showcase his bat.

Danny Worth will provide extra insurance in the middle infield and at third base, and Evan Reed will provide extra depth in the bullpen so that the regulars don’t have to be taxed unnecessarily, but neither figure to factor into the postseason discussion. Luke Putkonen and Jeremy Bonderman, who were sent down to the minor leagues today so the team could recall Phil Coke and Hernan Perez, are both expected to the big league team in a couple of days when the minor league season ends. Also expected around then is third catcher Bryan Holaday.

A corresponding move will need to be announced — a spot on the 40-man needs to be cleared for Castellanos — but that could be as simple as transferring Luis Marte to the 60-day disabled list for now.
