According to Matt Derry of Detroit Sports 105.1 FM, the Detroit Tigers seem to be planning some sort of announcement for later this morning.

And then the station’s Twitter account posted that they’re chasing the rumor that Jim Leyland might be announcing his retirement.

There are a couple of things this might be. The Leyland this is the most obvious and the most likely: either he’s announcing his retirement or the team is announcing they’re brining him back for another year. His contract is up, so there’s no “he’s fired” press conference that needs to happen. It could be that he’s not ready to retire but the team doesn’t want him back, but it wouldn’t seem to me like that would be the sort of thing to call a “morning after” press conference about (there would probably be some discussion behind the scenes first).

It could also be some sort of announcement regarding Miguel Cabrera’s injury – maybe he’s headed into some sort of surgery – but again, not really the sort of thing you hold a big presser for.

Other possibilities include a long-term extension for Cy Young Award candidate Max Scherzer. We’ll see.
