When We Last Met
Drew Smyly took the mound for the Detroit Tigers and pitched very well after receiving the run support he has been lacking in his starts this season. The Tigers’ hitters went to work and then some on the Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie, and the subsequent relievers that followed him and ended up taking game one of the four game set by a score of 16-4.

Anibal Sanchez(5-3, 3.18 ERA) is coming off what was clearly his worst outing of the season, a 5.2 inning affair in which he gave up 7 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks. Prior to his last start, Sanchez had not given up more than four earned runs in any start this season, and the four run outing against Texas, which ended up resulting in a win for Sanchez after some run support from his teammates.
Though his 4-2 record doesn’t show it, Sanchez has been dominant against Kansas City in his career, as evidenced by his 1.04 ERA in 43.1 innings. In Sanchez’s last start against Kansas City in June, he gave up only one run on 5 hits and a walk in 7 innings. If there was ever a team for Sanchez to bounce back against, the Royals certainly seem to fit the bill.

Danny Duffy(5-8, 2.86 ERA)last pitched against Cleveland and took the loss after giving up 4 runs on 10 hits in 6 innings. Duffy has had a successful season thus far, though he has lacked in run support.
Duffy last faced the Tigers June 19th and took a loss, though he gave up only 2 runs on 3 hits. He is 0-2 with a 2.45 ERA in 11 innings pitched against the Tigers in his career.
