Victor Martinez is, as expected, not in the starting lineup for the final game before the All Star break.
When We Last Met
The Detroit Tigers’ offense broke out in the ninth inning and cemented the series win with a decisive 5-1 victory. Detroit looks to not only sweep the Royals but also to take a six game winning streak into the All Star break while extending their lead in the Central Division to 8.5 games.
Justin Verlander(8-7, 4.84 ERA) had a terrible first inning against the LA Dodgers, giving up five runs, but was able to carry on and get lifted by his team and go on to get the win. Not for nothing, Verlander did his part after the offense came through and pitched five scoreless innings after the offensive explosion.
Verlander is 17-6 with a 3.10 ERA in 215 innings against Kansas City in his career. He last faced the Royals June 16th and was shelled, giving up seven runs on 12 hits in sic innings.
Bruce Chen(1-2, 7.11 ERA) last pitched 1 inning against the Indians and gave up no hits or runs.
In his career against the Tigers, Chen is 6-9 with a 5.52 ERA in 109.1 innings pitched.
