The Detroit Tigers and starter Rick Porcello beat the New York Yankees 5-2. Porcello was once again lights out, going eight innings, giving up two runs on nine hits. Porcello didn’t walk a batter and struck out two. He gave up only two runs, both on solo homers to Jacoby Ellsbury. Porcello induced two double plays, including a phenomenal play at first base by Miguel Cabrera who started the double play from his knees, then made it back in time to cover first and get the second out. Rick Porcello gave up only one run to the Yankees in his last start against them and took the loss, tonight he once again pitched a gem and this time it was good enough for the win.

Joe Nathan came in for the ninth and retired the side in order, backed up by solid defense by Miguel Cabrera and the rest of the infield.

The Tigers offense was on point, with J.D. Martinez leading the way going three for four, scoring two runs, and getting one RBI. Torii Hunter also had two hits and an RBI. Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez, Nick Castellanos and Rajai Davis all also notched hits and Castellanos and Davis both also batted in runs. One of the Tigers runs scored on a bases loaded walk given up by Yankees starter Brandon McCarthy.

The Tigers play the Yankees again tomorrow night at 7:08pm. Derek Jeter will be honored by the Detroit Tigers organization prior to the start of the game.
