Game Preview

The Detroit Tigers continue their two-day stay on Jupiter–well actually IN Jupiter, Florida. Yesterday they faced Don Kelly and the Miami Marlins, losing 4-2, today they will face the Roger Dean Stadium’s other tenant, the St. Louis Cardinals. The Tigers will be looking to turn things around after losing six of their last seven games.

It will not be as drama-filled as the 1934, 1968 and 2006 World Series meetings for the teams, but we’re sure this game means the world to someone somewhere out there.

This is the first of two meetings between the Tigers and Cardinals with the second and final game coming March 28 in Lakeland.

When We Last Met

Detroit took both Spring Training matchups a year ago.

The teams have not met in games that count since a June 2012 series in Detroit in which the Tigers took two of three. The Cardinals will be the host team when the teams reunite in St. Louis from May 15-17, with the last game of that series being a rare non-Yankees or Red Sox ESPN Sunday Night Baseball game.

Like the Tigers, the Cardinals have gone to the playoffs four straight seasons, the last two as NL Central Champions. They won the World Series in 2011, lost it in 2013 and lost to the Giants in the NLDS 4 games to 1 last year.

Detroit Tigers Lineup

David Price is saving it for the regular season–apparently. He’s been hit hard in his first two outings, allowing four runs in four innings of work while walking three. Price will be opposed by former Boston Red Sox John Lackey for the Cardinals.

Yoenis Cespedes and Alex Avila are in the lineup today, along with Jose Iglesias. Ian Kinsler was prepared to make the trip to Jupiter to play in today’s case, but Brad Ausmus decided to hold him off until tomorrow’s game in Lakeland against the Nationals.
