When We Last Met

Coming off the two-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs, the Detroit Tigers head come 4.5 games back in the Wild Card race with an opportunity to make up some ground on a team in front of them: the Texas Rangers.

This is the first matchup between the Tigers and Rangers this season. Last year, Detroit went 4-3 against Texas, but the Rangers won three out of four at Comerica Park.

Because Rangers first baseman Prince Fielder missed both of those series last season due to a neck injury, this will be Fielder’s first game back in Detroit since the 2013 ALCS. Hard to believe it hard been that long, but Fielder is having an excellent season, hitting .324 with 17 home runs and 69 RBI.

Pitching Matchup

Right-hander Alfredo Simon will be starting for the Tigers on Thursday. Simon started the season strongly, but he has been terrible in his last 10 starts. Over that span, Simon has posted a 8.19 ERA and opponents are batting .335 against him.

Overall, Simon is 10-7 with a 4.84 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 86 strikeouts in 128 1/3 innings.

The Rangers will start 24-year-old left-hander Martin Perez, who has pitched well over his last three starts. In those three outings, Perez has allowed five earned runs in 20 1/3 innings, and Texas has won all three of those games.

For the season, Perez is 1-2 with a 5.29 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 17 strikeouts in 32 1/3 frames.
