Detroit Tigers fans will see a familiar face return to the team as John Hicks takes James McCann’s roster spot after Detroit’s starter landed on the disabled list. The Tigers announced the move in a tweet.

Detroit Tigers catcher James McCann will be sidelined for the time being.

The team’s usual starter was in the starting lineup on Thursday, and logged an at-bat in the team’s 7-6 road loss to the Houston Astros.

However, McCann would later exit the game due to injury after being hit by a pitcher.

Alex Avila replaced the 26-year-old as a pinch-runner. Avila fined the game 1-for-2 with a run scored, a walk and a strikeout.

The Tigers would announce in a tweet on the team’s official Twitter account that McCann went on the disabled list in a tweet on Friday morning.

Detroit’s official Twitter account tweeted the following:

"“The #Tigers have placed catcher James McCann on the 10-day DL with a left hand laceration and recalled C/1B John Hicks from Toledo (AAA).”"

On the season, McCann owns a 0.5 WAR. He’s batting .204 with a .290 on-base percentage and a .426 slugging percentage.

The backstop’s other stats include a .222 ISO, a .307 wOBA and a 92 wRC+ to go along with 17 RBI, 13 runs, 13 walks, seven home runs and three doubles. He also logged a solid 1.5 BsR.

Replacing McCann is Hicks, who is no stranger to Tigers fans after appearing in seven games earlier in the season.

The former Toledo Mud Hen has predominantly appeared at first base with Detroit, but should see time behind the dish with McCann out.

John Hicks’ production

In 27 plate appearances with the Tigers, Hicks has made a significant impact with 11 hits, seven RBI, six runs scored, three doubles, a walk and a home run.

That spits out to a .423 batting average, a .444 on-base percentage, a .654 slugging percentage and a 1.098 OPS.

He also chipped in with a .231 ISO, a .466 wOBA and a 202 wRC+.

If he can continue to hit, that kind of production should certainly provide the Tigers offense with an added boost.
