Miguel Cabrera just hit an opposite-field home run 441 feet.

This is not something normal ball players do. This is not something good ball players do.

This is unreal.

After the oppo-dong landed several rows back in right-center in Arlington, my first thoughts were to how unbelievably lucky Detroit fans are to watch this guy play day-in and day-out. This is a once in a generation-type hitter. My second thought was a bit more…eccentric.

What would be the haul for trading someone like this?

One of the things that most seems to influence discussions in deals in modern baseball is the amount of contract left, and the duration of the deal.

Cabrera’s deal runs through 2015, and he’ll make 21 million this year, and then 22 million the next two years. Seven players made more annually than Cabrera did in 2012, which was a 21 million payday. Two others also made that much.

Probably the two factors that follow contractual status in the importance of any trade is age and ability, because one is usually impacted by the other. Cabrera is newly 30, and he is the best hitter in the major leagues. His career arc has been in an upward trajectory since he came in the league in terms of offense, and he has shown that he can play first base well, third base average, and probably left field a little better than Delmon Young.

So, what would he be worth in a trade?

Frankly, it’s a lot more difficult a premise than one would think. Most hitters start the down slope of their power primes at 32 or 33, but Cabrera’s hinting at lasting a bit longer. But when his contract runs out after ’15, what would he be worth? He could very well be looking at a Pujols-type deal : Albert got a ten-year, 200+ million dollar contract at 32, and Cabrera could be staring down a gold-plated barrel of the same karat. So, essentially, whatever team would acquire him is basically hoping he’ll take the dollars when his current, “affordable” contract expires.

But what would the Tigers get in return? Prospects? MLB veterans? Young stars? Would he net a Jurickson Profar? A Giancarlo Stanton? A riot in the streets of Michigan?

It’s a fun though to roll around in one’s mind, mostly because it won’t happen. Detroit Tiger fans have fallen in love with the pudgy-faced slugger, and the everyone associated with the Tigers, from Mr. Illitch to the singing vendor, would all have coronaries if he left via trade.

But what if?

Not only did the Detroit Tigers fall to the Kansas City Royals in their game on Thursday, but they also lost some organizational depth to the Miami Marlins. The Florida club claimed left-handed pitcher Duane Below off waivers and sent him to Triple-A New Orleans.

Duane Below may find that it’s easier to move up the ranks of the Miami Marlins organization than it was at his previous home. (Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports)

The Tigers had dropped Below from their 40-man roster on Wednesday to make room for zombie closer Jose Valverde, surprisingly back from the unrestricted free agent list to assume his former role in the Detroit bullpen.

Below, 27, logged 75.1 innings for the Tigers over the last two years as both a starter and a reliever, and has a 4.06 ERA and a 43/19 K/BB ratio to show for it. After a poor spring training, he has not appeared in the major leagues this year, but went 1-2 with a 2.10 ERA in four starts this season at Triple-A Toledo.

The 19th-round Detroit draft pick of 2006 may have been a candidate for a spot start this year if the club eventually needs one. But three left-handers in the bullpen—Phil Coke, Drew Smyly, and Darin Downs—made his existence in the Tiger system less important. Further, left-handed prospect Casey Crosby is said to have a higher ceiling than Below and could also start for the Tigers this season if the need arises.

Having been born and raised in Britton, Mich., Below’s departure leaves the Tigers with only one Michigan-born player, Downs, of Southfield, on their 40-man roster.

After an off-season of denial, a spring training of uncertainty, and one blown save, the Detroit Tigers have signed former closer Jose Valverde to a minor league contract. Patrick Reuesse of 1500 ESPN Twin Cities tweeted the news early this afternoon.

Jose Valverde is back with the Detroit Tigers on a minor league deal. (Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports)

Reuesse reported general manager Dave Dombrowski’s plan to have Valverde throw some in Lakeland, then eventually join the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens. There is no reported timetable. The move comes one day after Joaquin Benoit and Phil Coke combined to blow a 2-1 ninth-inning lead to the Minnesota Twins.

When Valverde reaches Toledo, he’ll likely run into Bruce Rondon, the 22-year-old fireballer the Tigers hoped could replace Papa Grande this season after Valverde’s late-season fallout last year.

According to MLB.com beat reporter Jason Beck, Valverde can opt out of the contract if he’s not pitching in the major leagues on May 5th.

While many fans are already banging their heads against the wall over this move, it seems like a low-risk, high-reward decision. If it pays off, everybody’s happy. If it doesn’t, they gave him a chance, and the team is no worse off than they are now.
