Don’t Blame Ty Cobb For Tigers’ Embarassing Loss Last Night

facebooktwitterreddit

It isn’t often that two of my passions, the Detroit Tigers and NCAA Division III basketball, intersect in historic ways but it happened last night.

Do you remember reading that Tigers legend Ty Cobb’s great-grandson is playing college basketball instead of baseball?

Did you hear that the Caltech (more formally known as the California Institute of Technology) basketball team ended a 310 game conference losing streak last night?

Let’s connect the dots:

Ty Cobb is a freshman forward for the Occidental College basketball team (nicknamed the Tigers!).

Caltech’s opponent last night? Occidental.

The two teams met in a late season Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) game, the only thing different about this game and the others since January 23, 1985 was that Caltech was victorious and the great-grandson of a baseball legend was on the opposing bench.

Ty Cobb (the basketball player) may have ended up on the wrong side of a historic game but he shouldn’t shoulder the blame. Cobb finished with four points after making both of his field goal attempts and corralled three rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench.

Let’s hope for better things for the other Tigers team associated with the name Ty Cobb.
