Down on the Farm: Tigers Sign 16-Year-Old Adelin Santa

The Tigers signed 16-year-old Dominican third baseman Adelin Santa for $750,000 yesterday.

Ben Badler of Baseball America had this to say about Santa.

"Santa, a 16-year-old from Santo Domingo, is a 6-foot-3, 190-pound righthanded hitter who stands out for his raw power and arm strength."

While I don’t have much beyond that on Santa, the move is encouraging. Several gems can come from being aggressive with international signings. In fact, several of the Tigers current top prospects including Francisco Martinez, Gustavo Nunez and Danry Vazquez were acquired through similar international signings. Although Santa likely won’t see time stateside for a couple years, the move addresses the Tigers paper thin depth in the infield.
