Will Joel Zumaya be ready for 2009?
He was lights out in 2006. His triple digit fastball was the talk of Bloggers, Writers, Reporters and anyone who saw Joel Zumaya light up the radar gun. But in back to back seasons, injuries held back, who many feel is the future closer in this organization. According to the organization, Zumaya is progressing as scheduled. But like the organization mentions, its a moment to moment basis. You cannot bank on the fact that he will be healthy. And I hope the organization realizes this too.
So what is the next step to ensuring a good bullpen in 2009? Obviously it would be nice to add a Trevor Hoffman or Brandon Lyon. Last year the Tigers only converted 58% oh their save chances. A lot of that has to do witht the consistent struggle of Fernando Rodney and Kyle Farnsworth. But some blame has to fall on Zoom himself. I am not going to surprised if management sits on their hands and allows the youngsters to develop this season, while signing mid range relievers, that will be no better than the cards we were dealt in ’08. One high point though has to be Freddi Dolsi. He settled in nicely after a rough start. Could he be the set up role needed? only time will tell.
