Down on the Farm: Francisco Martinez Heating Up

After an outstanding campaign with the Advanced-A Lakeland Flying Tigers last season, third baseman Francisco Martinez found himself regarded as a top ten prospect in the Detroit Tigers farm system. Now twenty years-old, Martinez is facing yet another aggressive assignment in AA-Erie,

After hitting just .179 in 67 at-bats last month, something has clicked and  Martinez has began to right the ship. In 67 at-bats this month he’s hitting .343 with 4 doubles, 1 triple, 3 homers and 5 RBI. The hot streak has increased his batting average to .261 on the season. His plate discipline still needs to improve a tick as he has just 10 walks to 37 strikeouts. The power numbers are definitely encouraging though. Martinez has already hit 5 homers, after hitting just 3 last season in Lakeland.

Beyond the numbers it’s encouraging to see that Martinez has once again risen to the occasion on yet another aggressive assignment. Francisco is holding his own against players 3-5 years older than him for the third straight season.

Keep an eye on Francisco Martinez as he continues to earn his stripes down on the farm.
