Tigers Recall Schlereth, Option Ruffin
By John Parent

It certainly was the move we had all been hoping would be announced today, but the Detroit Tigers have recalled LHP Daniel Schlereth from Triple-A Toledo and optioned RHP Chance Ruffin. Somehow, this means that David Purcey, whose ineptitude seems to know no bounds, is staying on the active roster. It also means the Tigers now once again feature four left handers in their bullpen.
Color me confused.
Schlereth has struggled with walks, both while with the Tigers this year and while in the minor leagues. Considering that Purcey already walks every other batter e faces while throwing left handed, it seems the Tigers were pretty well stocked up on that type of hurler already. One can only hope that this move is a precursor of a bigger announcement to come soon.
For what it’s worth, Ruffin was much better in his two inning effort yesterday than he was in his debut game. Versus the Angels he allowed two hits in two scoreless innings. He struck out a pair and walked no one.
So to sum up, the Tigers sent down a right hander with good stuff who throws strikes and can get strikeouts in order to add a fourth left hander to the bullpen, one who has trouble throwing strikes.
Yep. Still very confused.
