Victor Martinez May Miss 2012 Season
Detroit Tigers Designated Hitter Victor Martinez suffered a torn ACL during a workout session last week, according to reports. Surgery is likely and such a procedure will cost Martinez the season.
The Tigers have already committed more than $109 million to the payroll for 2012, but it is anticipated that much of the $13 million owed to Martinez would be covered by insurance. The Tigers could use some of that money to sign one of the veteran DH/1B types that remain on the market.
Those names, highlighted by former Tigers Carlos Pena and Johnny Damon, also include Derrek Lee and Hideki Matsui. Obviously none of those names are as appealing as having VMart would be.
One thing is for sure, the next few weeks of the off-season just got a lot more interesting for Tigers fans. If you thought the Tigers would push hard for Yeonnis Cespedes before, you ain’t seen nothing yet.
Stay tuned to MCB for updates as more information becomes public.
