Smyly Should Be All Smiles After His Performance Today

Lakeland, Fl.–Detroit Tigers prospect and 5th starter candidate Drew Smyly may have just took the lead in the race for the final spot. Earlier this afternoon, the 22-year-old southpaw tormented Atlanta Braves hitters in a Minor League game on the back fields of Tiger Town. Braves hitters were off balance, guessing and seemed frustrated with Smyly today.

Smyly wasted no time, striking out the first batter of the game. Missing bats would prove to be the theme for the day, as Smyly would go on to strikeout an impressive eight batters in four scoreless frames. Ending on a high note, Smyly struck out the side on ten pitches in the fourth inning. He would finish the afternoon allowing just one walk and three hits over his four innings of work.

With less than two weeks remaining, and Andy Oliver’s setback yesterday , Smyly continues to make his case for the final spot in the rotation. Regardless of the outcome, Drew Smyly has looked incredible this spring.
