With Jhonny Peralta’s suspension officially handed down and accepted, the Detroit Tigers had a roster move to make. As expected, Hernan Perez will be recalled from the minor leagues to fill the open spot. Perez was optioned on Friday, but reportedly never left the team in preparation of the looming suspension. Typically players need to wait 10 days to be recalled, but drug suspensions are treated similarly to injuries in that recently optioned players can be immediately actived to fill those openings.
Perez will likely remain with the team until Omar Infante is able to return from injury. It’s not yet clear whether he’ll return (or remain) with the major league clube when rosters expand in September or rejoin Erie for the Eastern League playoffs.
Also being activated today is Jeremy Bonderman, who is taking Evan Reed’s spot in the bullpen.
In (probably) bigger news, Miguel Cabrera is slated to rejoin the lineup after being in and out of action for two weeks. His pinch hit single in Sunday’s extra inning game against the Chicago White Sox represented the game’s winning run (although Matt Tuiasosopo pinch ran for him).
Here’s the full lineup for Monday’s series opener in Cleveland:
Anibal Sanchez is the starting pitcher for Detroit. He’s set to face Cleveland starter Corey Kluber.
