All eyes will be on Lakeland this afternoon as Justin Verlander will take the hill for the Detroit Tigers for the first time this Spring, and experience his first “real” outing after successful rehab following surgery in early January. JV and the Tigers will take on the Philadelphia Phillies, who will have a split squad with half their team staying back in Clearwater to face the New York Yankees.
Sadly, there is no TV or radio coverage of this game either locally or on MLB.TV, so you’ll have to keep up with the beat writers’ Twitter accounts or follow the stats on MLB Gameday.
There is a strong chance of showers and thunderstorms through Central Florida on Thursday. If the game is cancelled (no make-ups in Spring Training), Verlander will throw a bullpen session and keep his spot in the rotation next time through.

When We Last Met
The Tigers played the Yankees and Phillies last Friday in their first split-squad action of spring, dropping both. Nick Castellanos had a big day for Detroit against Philly, but the young pitchers on the travel squad were hit hard in the 10-6 loss in Clearwater.
