Detroit Tigers place Anibal Sanchez and Joakim Soria on disabled list

The Detroit Tigers were hoping for some good news on the injury front after losing Anibal Sanchez and Joakim Soria to in-game injuries on Friday and Saturday.

That good news did not come.

It appears that Sanchez is worse off and could miss upwards of 3 to 4 weeks with a pectoral muscle strain. According to Schmehl, Robbie Ray will be recalled from Triple-A Toledo to take his spot.

According to MLB.com beat writer, Jason Beck, Soria thought he needed a day or two off, but was unsure if he needed to be placed on the DL.

Soria’s placement on the DL means the Tigers’ bullpen will be shorthanded today. With Joe Nathan‘s long outings the last two days, it is almost a certainly he will be unavailable today, which means only Joba Chamberlain, who allowed Toronto’s walk-off on Saturday, will be available as a back-end option.

For a struggling team, now holding on to first place by a very thin margin, this is not good news at all.
