A fresh face has been added to the Detroit Tigers coaching staff. Former major-leaguer David Newhan joins the team as an assistant hitting coach after one season of managing Class A Vermont, the Oakland Athletics affiliate.

"Newhan played parts of eight major league seasons with the San Diego Padres, Philadelphia Phillies, Baltimore Orioles, New York Mets and Houston Astros."

The hiring of Newhan continues the Tigers’ strong trend of hiring former major league payers as coaches. Almost all of the Tigers current coaching staff have major league experience, including Brad Ausmus and Omar Vizquel.  Newhan will be assisting current hitting coach Wally Joyner and will almost certainly be a help to the club.
