2018 Detroit Tigers number one overall draft pick Casey Mize made his AA debut Tuesday night for the Erie Seawolves and tossed an incredible no-hitter to propel Erie to a 1-0 victory over Altoona.

Those who closely follow the Tigers and their prospect system are likely plenty familiar with who Casey Mize is at this point. People who are less familiar with the Detroit Tigers crop of prospects should be hearing more about Mize now after his amazing no-hitter performance in his AA ball debut Tuesday night. For those who need a refresher on Detroit’s outstanding potential future ace, here’s an inside look into Casey Mize.

College Days

The Detroit Tigers selected Auburn pitcher Casey Mize first overall in the 2018 MLB Draft. Before joining the Auburn Tigers to play college ball, Mize played at Springville High School in Springville, Alabama. He finished high school as the number four college prospect in the state and the second-ranked Alabama pitcher and in 2016 began his freshman year at Auburn.

Mize started seven games and made 16 appearances in his freshman year with the Tigers posting a 3.52 ERA and a 2-5 record. His sophomore campaign was when heads really began to turn, however, as Casey started 12 games finishing with an 8-2 record and a 2.04 ERA. A strong junior year would round out Mize’s college career finishing his time at Auburn with an overall 20-13 record and 2.96 ERA through his three years in school.

Detroit Tigers

Casey Mize began making a name for himself right out of the gate inside the Tigers organization. Mize started four games for the Lakeland Tigers in 2018 and finished with a 4.63 ERA but allowed only 13 hits in eleven and 2/3 innings pitched.

Detroit decided to keep Mize in Lakeland to begin 2019 and Mize brought his top stuff throughout his four starts in Florida. His 2-0 record and 0.35 ERA were enough for the organization to decide it was time for Casey to make the move up to AA Erie just last week.

The Tigers’ AA affiliate Erie Seawolves were on the road in Altoona to face the Curve, an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, on Tuesday night and had Casey Mize on the mound for his AA debut. Mize fanned seven Altoona hitters and was just one walk shy of a perfect game in his incredible no-hitter debut Tuesday. Casey Mize has looked utterly dominant through much of the way so far as he makes his journey to the big leagues. This no-hitter should be just a sign of more greatness to come from a prospect who looks like a future All-Star in the making. Tigers fans, make sure to keep an eye on Casey Mize.
