The Detroit Tigers lost their first game of a two-game series with Philadelphia last night in a 15 inning pitchers duel that went past midnight.

The Detroit Tigers fought hard last night against the Philadelphia Phillies before losing the game in the 15th inning. The game was tied 2-2 from the 6th inning up until Philly plated one more in the top of the 15th, winning the game 3-2. Both teams had stellar pitching, but couldn’t get much going on offense.

Matthew Boyd went for 6.0 innings and had eight strikeouts. He only gave up two runs off of a two-run homer in the top of the second. The bullpen pitched eight more scoreless innings after Boyd came out of the game but ultimately ended up giving up the losing run. This was still a great game for Tigers’ pitching despite the loss.

This game was not so great for the Tigers offense. Once again, they had opportunities to score runs with runners in scoring position and they failed to execute. Miguel Cabrera grounded into a double play with runners on first and second, Harold Castro failed to execute a sacrifice bunt properly, and both Jeimer Candelario and John Hicks struck out with runners in scoring position. Also, on a play that could have won the game, Nick Castellanos was thrown out at home plate.

This was the longest game so far of the season for the Tigers both in time and innings. The game went 15 innings long and didn’t end until past midnight. There was also a 38-minute rain delay before the game even started. This will surely set the stage for an interesting day game today.

The series continues today at 1:10 EST. The pitching matchup is scheduled to be Vince Velasquez for the Phillies and Jordan Zimmermann for the Detroit Tigers. Both of these pitchers have struggled so far this season, so expect to see a lot more offense in this one unless these pitchers can get it together.
