The MLB trade deadline is this Wednesday, which means the Detroit Tigers have just a couple of days left to find the best deals for some of the most sought after trade chips in baseball.
Being one of the best closers in baseball this year, Shane Greene has drawn plenty of interest from clubs looking to make a big addition to the bullpen at the trade deadline. As Wednesday gets closer, Greene’s days with the Detroit Tigers are certainly coming to a close, and new reports indicate a couple of teams that may be seriously interested in making a deal for the Tigers’ closer.
A report this weekend from Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle indicates that the Oakland Athletics have looked into acquiring Shane Greene before the deadline. This news comes as the A’s traded for Royals lefty reliever Jake Diekman this weekend, with Greene being a possible target to round out an already pretty solid Oakland bullpen.
Slusser also notes that Oakland has shown interest in New York Mets starter Noah Syndergaard, but after the Mets acquired Marcus Stroman from the Blue Jays on Sunday, who knows if New York is going to be dealing Syndergaard away anymore. Could this open the door for a possible package deal of Shane Greene and starter Matthew Boyd to Oakland from Detroit? Detroit Tigers fans may find out soon enough.
Another club that has shown heavy interest in both Boyd and Greene is the New York Yankees. According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi on Twitter Sunday night, the Yankees have seemingly increased their interest in possibly adding Greene to their bullpen.
New York could be the best place to look if Tigers GM Al Avila decides he wants to package Greene and Boyd for a massive return. Although New York already has All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman in the bullpen, nothing ever seems like enough for the Yankees, does it? They have a serious interest in improving both their rotation and bullpen, so the Yankees could become perfect partners for Detroit.
Although asking for rising star 2B Gleyber Torres could be more than the Yankees want to give up, a package deal including Boyd and Greene could net the Tigers young outfielder Clint Frazier in return plus a couple of mid-level prospects. Avila could also push for New York’s top prospect OF Estevan Florial, but no matter what, a package including two of the hottest pitchers on the trade market is sure to land a sizable return.
The Detroit Tigers have just a couple of days left to follow through on being some of the biggest sellers in the trade market. Plenty of teams are interested in Greene, Boyd, and more of what Detroit has to offer, and Tigers fans will soon be able to see what long-awaited deals get made.
