The Detroit Tigers couldn’t pull out the series win against the Seattle Mariners today, losing the final game of the homestand 7-2.

The Detroit Tigers played their final game of a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners today and wound up losing the game 7-2. Detroit lost this series 1-2 and went 1-6 against Seattle during the regular season. These games were largely inconsequential, however, as neither of these teams has much hope of making the playoffs.

Spencer Turnbull got the start today for Detroit, and while he didn’t pitch terribly, he didn’t do enough to secure himself a victory. He went for 5.0 innings pitched and gave up three runs on six hits, but he was able to record eight strikeouts along the way. Turnbull has shown he has good stuff, but he needs to work on his control to limit his walks and hits.

Detroit’s bullpen continued to struggle in today’s game. David McKay, who was recently claimed off waivers, and Tyler Alexander both gave up a run out of the pen and Matt Hall gave up two. These runs put the game far out of reach for Detroit, and the bullpen has been a big issue for Detroit all season long. This will surely be a focus in the offseason.

The Tigers didn’t score too many runs today, but a few players did have solid nights. Brandon Dixon and Victor Reyes both went 2-for-4 and continued to hit the ball well. Miguel Cabrera had a long home run and was about 10 feet short of recording a second one to straightaway center. The Tigers have been stringing together some nice at-bats lately, a trend that will hopefully continue.

Detroit heads out to Tampa Bay tomorrow to start off a road trip that will also take them to Houston and Minnesota. These are some of the best teams in the league, and Detroit will have their work cut out for them. This will be a good experience for the younger players to try to get some reps in against some of the best pitching and hitting in the league.
