The 2025 MLB Playoffs have arrived, and while the path to October saw a hiccup for the Detroit Tigers during the final month of the regular season, their path to the World Series begins with an American League Wild Card series against the Cleveland Guardians. Certainly, Tigers fans are ready for the emotional roller coaster that is playoff baseball, but they'd better be prepared to see some familiar faces this month.
Considering that the Tigers are in the early years of their contention window, there isn't a laundry list of former players who have been main contributors to their new team's success. Still, whether it was once a promising pitching prospect or a fan-favorite outfielder, there are several players that Tigers fans will be glad to cross paths with once again.
Here are the former Tigers players that fans may not have realized are in the playoffs
There are several former Tigers players who stand to make an impact in the playoffs. Of course, the goal isn't the list of every single former Tiger set to play in the weeks ahead, but look at several notable ex-Tigers who stand to make an impact.
Matthew Boyd - Chicago Cubs
The early years of Matthew Boyd's career were spent in Detroit, but injuries prevented him from cementing his spot in the Tigers' rotation for the long term. The 2025 season has been a breakout season for Boyd, earning his first All-Star selection as a member of the Chicago Cubs. There's been some regression during the second half of the season, but he enters the playoffs atop the Cubs' rotation.
Max Scherzer - Toronto Blue Jays
It was Max Scherzer's final two years with the Tigers in 2013 and 2014 when he began his ascent toward being one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. Now, at 41 years of age, Scherzer is on the back end of his career but has a chance to turn back the clock during the playoffs with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Eugenio Suarez - Seattle Mariners
Eugenio Suarez only spent the first season of his career with the Tigers, but it didn't stop fans from begging for a reunion at the MLB trade deadline this season. Suarez was the big deadline addition for the Seattle Mariners, and he didn't quite match the power pace he had during the first half of the season with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Still, he can change the course of a game with one swing.
Nick Castellanos - Philadelphia Phillies
It hasn't been the smoothest of seasons for Nick Castellanos in Philadelphia, as his struggles have led to him being benched at various points of the season. Still, Castellanos was beloved by Tigers fans during his time in Detroit, and he still has some pop in his bat that could prove to be the difference for the Phillies this month.
