Fans' patience for AJ Hinch's matchup-heavy managerial style has worn thin this season, but Jahmai Jones hasn't made things easy on his manager.
Jones took over for Andy Ibáñez as the Tigers' resident lefty killer in June last year and was stunningly effective in the role, hitting .288 with a .970 OPS in 122 plate appearances against lefty pitchers. He's been anything but in 2026, batting a paltry .162/.539 in 77 plate appearances.
Which is why it struck a particular nerve with fans that Hinch pulled Kerry Carpenter in the fourth on Monday so Jones could face Astros lefty Steven Okert. Jones struck out swinging and the Tigers ended up leaving two men on with a 5-3 lead.
Detroit would go on to win the game 9-3, but Hinch was still castigated for his decision to swap Carpenter and Jones, who went hitless through the rest of the game.
AJ did it again….

He takes Kerry Carpenter out of the game in the 4th inning for Jahmai Jones who proceeds to strike out.
Tigers strand men on the corners.
No doubt, Detroit will face a righty later in the game and Jones will be up because Carpenter was taken out.

AJ Hinch decides to pinch hit Kerry in the 4th inning and Jones strikes out.
Tigers fans are well aware that, despite Detroit's 8-4 record in June, there is still a huge amount of ground to cover if they want to sneak their way into a Wild Card spot, and we're still sensitive to the fact that the Tigers were so overwhelming awful for the entire month of May.
... But they still won on Monday night — and by a lot — so maybe we can take it easy on this one?
Tigers fans are up in arms about AJ Hinch's puzzling decision to pinch-hit Jahmai Jones vs. Astros
We know, we know. It's not just about this one instance; it's about every other time that Hinch decides to pull a hot bat in favor of a struggling one, for seemingly no other reason than lefty-righty matchups.
Hinch did warn that this was going to happen, though. He hinted during the offseason that despite lefty Carpenter's miraculous ALDS homer off of lefty Gabe Speier, he was going to continue to play matchups at will. And Carpenter has an even worse OPS this year against lefties than Jones at .490.
Do the Tigers need a more effective lefty killer than Jones? Absolutely. Was Hinch necessarily wrong to take Carpenter out given not only the historical data, but the data from this season? Maybe not.
We'll allow that it was a very early hook. Giving Carpenter a single at-bat against a lefty, keeping him deeper into the game, then waiting to see how the Astros used their bullpen later wouldn't have been the worst thing in the world.
But fans' complaints about Hinch's machinations are nothing new, and he's continued to stick to his guns. The only real solution now is for the Tigers to replace Jones (which they also do not seem eager to do), not to expect them to upend their entire game planning philosophy overnight.
