If there's one bright spot from the Tigers' series against the White Sox this weekend, it was Brett Callahan's debut on Sunday.
Callahan, Detroit's No. 19 prospect, was called up as the Tigers look ahead to a stretch filled with right-handed starters. He wasn't hitting exceptionally well in Toledo before he got the call — 2-for-26 from Aug. 7 to Aug. 14 — but AJ Hinch didn't seem daunted. "This is the test," he said after Callahan's promotion.
He slotted in at seventh in the Tigers' lineup as Detroit tried to avoid a sweep. Chicago starter Sean Burke's first pitch to him was a knuckle curve low and in, and Callahan didn't miss it, hitting it down the right field line for a one-out, two-run triple, sliding in just under the tag of third baseman Miguel Vargas.

He scored just one batter later thanks to a single from fellow rookie Max Clark. He struck out in his next at-bat and then was replaced by Ben Malgeri before he could get another turn, but it was one of the few things for Tigers fans to get excited about this weekend.
Brett Callahan joins growing list of exciting Tigers rookie debuts in 2026
Of the six position player rookies who are currently on the roster, all of Callahan, Clark, Malgeri, Kevin McGonigle, and Eduardo Valencia have reached safely in their first major league plate appearances. In fact, they form something of a perfect cycle: Clark had a walk, Malgeri a single, McGonigle a double, Callahan a triple, and Valencia a home run.
The Tigers' core of position players is overwhelmingly comprised of homegrown players, all the way from the draft to the majors. The only exceptions currently on the active roster are Javy BĂ¡ez, Gleyber Torres, Zach McKinstry, Hao-Yu Lee, and Corey Julks.
Despite how the White Sox series played out, this is the team that Scott Harris plead patience for and has been winning far more than than they've been losing since June 1. The youth movement is coming into fuller view.
It's unclear how long Callahan has on the roster this season. It depends on injuries, but the Tigers also seem strangely attached to James Outman. But Callahan has a window right now where he can prove that he should stick around on this team through the rest of the season. If Clark, Malgeri, McGonigle, and Valencia are any proof, a good first impression goes a long way.
