Brewers’ World Series dominance is bringing up the most unpleasant Tigers memories possible

Let’s take a trip down nightmare lane.

For most Tigers fans, baseball has been over for a month now and the World Series hasn’t spent one second on most televisions in the Detroit area.

That’s probably for the best because what we’re seeing is flat-out dominance by the Brewers, which has triggered some PTSD for Tigers fans who are still trying to forget the last time there was a World Series sweep: 2012.

The team on the wrong side of the last World Series sweep? Your Detroit Tigers.

That’s right, the 2026 World Series has a chance to be the first since 2012 that has ended in a 4-0 sweep. The Brewers are displaying dominance that we haven’t seen in baseball’s main event in over a decade, and it’s making Tigers fans reminisce about the season that could have been.

Tampa still has a chance to pick up a win at home and extend the series, but Detroit fans know all too well what a 3-0 hole can do to a team. That 2012 team nearly won three World Series games (three were decided by two runs or less) but they ran out of gas trying to come back in Game 4 with a 4-3 loss in 10 innings. Yes, it still stings.

Unfortunately, that was the beginning of the end as Detroit would go on to lose in the ALCS to the Red Sox the next year (still hurts, too) and then the ALDS in 2014 before missing the playoffs for an entire decade.

The Brewers are making us all relive our worst nightmares but, fortunately for Tigers fans, the season will be over in potentially less than 24 hours.

Let’s not even think about that 2012 sweep again.

The Tigers’ World Series luck since 1984 has been atrocious

Just kidding — let’s actually take a quick trip down memory lane.

The Tigers went from the worst team in baseball to a World Series contender thanks to Mike Ilitch and Dave Dombrowski, and they really got the ball rolling in 2006 with a magical run that featured a Magglio Ordoñez walk-off home run against the Oakland Athletics in the ALCS to reach the World Series. That call still gives Tigers fans chills.

Unfortunately, the World Series was error-filled and the St. Louis Cardinals beat a pretty loaded Tiger team.

A five-year drought stood between the Tigers and the playoffs but then made the ALCS in 2011 and then the World Series in 2012 against the San Francisco Giants, who had their way with Detroit in a 4-0 sweep. Detroit would only score five runs the entire series, which was mind-boggling considering it featured a lineup with Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder.

Not even Justin Verlander or Max Scherzer could carry this team to a World Series win as the Giants dominated from Game 1 to extras in Game 4.

While the 2012 team’s run wasn’t quite as magic as the 2006 team’s, the roster was still far too good to be getting swept.

Surely the Rays will feel the same way once the Brewers shut the door on them to win the 2026 World Series.

Tigers fans, you’re (soon-to-be) not alone.
