The 2026 MLB Draft is almost upon us and, if we're being honest, no one actually knows how it's going to shake out until we hear players' names called. Apart from maybe the first 10 picks, teams have their own evaluators who have their own executives who have their own drafting philosophies. No amount of MLB Pipeline or Baseball America or Baseball Prospectus mock drafts could ever prepare every fanbase for what actually goes down.
The Tigers were the prime example of this last when they took high school shortstop Jordan Yost with the 24th overall pick. Yost wasn't a total unknown — he was ranked No. 50 on MLB Pipeline's draft prospects list — but no one thought he would go in the first round.
Scott Harris and his front office do lean toward a specific type of player with their first picks: high schoolers who play up the middle. Since Harris took over, the Tigers have selected Jace Jung (second base, the only non-high school player), Max Clark (high school center fielder), Bryce Rainer (high school shortstop), and Yost (high school shortstop).
The top of Detroit's pipeline is infield-heavy, so it's fair to assume they'll go for an outfielder or pitcher, but you really just never know.
Complete list of the Detroit Tigers' 2026 MLB Draft picks
- First Round: No. 22
- Second Round: No. 61
- Competitive Balance Round B: No. 69
- Fourth Round: No. 125
- Fifth Round: No. 158
- Rounds 6-20: Every 23rd pick
The first through fourth rounds will air on NBC/Peacock on Saturday starting at 1 PM. Rounds 5-20 will air on MLB Network on Sunday starting at 11:30.
The Tigers have a $9,165,100 bonus pool allotment after going out in the ALDS last season. They're missing a third-round pick because they signed Framber Valdez, who the Astros had extended a qualifying offer to. Houston gets an extra pick between the fourth and fifth rounds as compensation.
The Athletic has had the Tigers taking anyone from high school pitcher Carson Boleman and college pitcher Cameron Flukey. Baseball America's latest mock draft has them taking high school shortstop Aiden Ruiz (a very Tigers-esque pick). If the Tigers got MLB Pipeline's 22nd ranked prospect with their 22nd overall pick, they would get college outfielder Sawyer Strosnider.
But, as we've established, the Tigers might zig when we expect them to zag. Picks under Harris have been generally successful thus far (Jung might've been his only miss), and there is something fun about the unpredictability.
