The Detroit Tigers' second-half free-fall reached new depths in Tuesday's loss to the Cleveland Guardians, but the worst moment by far came in the sixth inning.
With no outs and a 2-1 count, Guardians designated hitter David Fry squared up to bunt over a runner on second but ended up taking a 99 mph fastball from Tigers ace Tarik Skubal off his face. Fry crumpled to the ground while clutching his face, which was covered in blood as athletic training staff rushed to his aid.
There was a lengthy delay in the game as Fry received medical attention. Fortunately, he was able to stand up on his own power and give fans a thumbs up as he was carted off the field. George Valera entered the game and took over the at-bat.
According to a report from The Athletic, Fry was first taken to Lutheran Medical Center before being transferred to the Cleveland Clinic Main Campus for further testing and observation.
David Fry exited the game after being hit in the face by a pitch.

Tarik Skubal reaches out to Guardians' David Fry following scary hit by pitch moment
Skubal, for his part, was visibly shaken up by the scene, throwing his hat to the ground and clasping his hands over his mouth as Fry lay on the ground. He appeared to still be rattled for the remainder of the inning, which saw the Tigers blow a 2-0 lead – in part, due to his errant throw to first and a wild pitch that score a run.
Even after the Tigers went on to lose the game – and the AL Central tiebreaker – in a crushing manner, Skubal's thoughts were still with Fry.
"I've already reached out to him," Skubal told reporters (including Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press) after the game. "I look forward to, hopefully at some point tonight or tomorrow morning, getting a text from him and making sure he's all good. There are things bigger than the game. The health of him is more important than a baseball game."
The Guardians have yet to provide an official update on Fry, who presumably spent the night in the hospital. The two teams play again on Wednesday, with Jack Flaherty taking the mound for the Tigers against Cleveland's Tanner Bibee. The Tigers and their fans are certainly wishing the best for Fry as they try to navigate capturing a much-needed win over their hated rival.
