Eugenio Suárez just all but officially asked for a reunion with the Tigers via trade

And now it's time to make it happen.

The slightly worrisome consensus among insiders is trending toward the Tigers not being major players at the trade deadline, instead sticking to their core guys and acquiring a few bullpen arms. But fans would love nothing more than to see Eugenio Suárez come back to Detroit.

Suárez makes sense for the Tigers in a lot of ways. The Diamondbacks have already paid him the majority of the $15 million he's making this year — the last in an extension he earned when he was with the Reds — and he'd temporarily fill the hole at third base. He comes with some sentimental value, too, as a former top prospect for the Tigers and a member of their last first-place team. But more than that, he's also still raking.

To the delight of Tigers fans, Suárez himself hyped up a reunion with the Tigers. Per Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press, he said, "To finish where everything started, it would be cool. It would mean a lot to me."

That could hint at an intention to retire after the season is over — which would be well-deserved after a likely 40+ homer, All-Star season — and it would be the perfect bookend to his career.

Eugenio Suárez said he would like to "finish where everything started" as Tigers reunion rumors swirl

Suárez knows that there's a real possibility he won't be in Arizona by the time August comes around. The Diamondbacks went into the All-Star break with a .485 record, fourth in the NL West, and 5.5 games out of a Wild Card spot behind the Giants, Cardinals, and Reds. The D-backs' front office could weigh their options and decide they're prepared to make a push and therefore hold onto Suárez, but because they're this far out now and he's so close to free agency, they'll have to entertain a few calls.

The Yankees, Reds, Brewers, and Cubs have also been connected to Suárez to varying degrees, and the Tigers would understandably be hesitant to give up a prospect haul to outbid them. Detroit may not even add a bat at all, given that Zach McKinstry has become a more than decent substitute at third base (and Colt Keith also needs a place to occasionally play in the infield), but if it were going to be someone, Suárez would be ideal.

The man himself said that he'd be more than happy to come back to Detroit. Scott Harris, we know you're listening. Let's make it happen.
