Jahmai Jones has been an eminently likable number on the Tigers' roster since he was called up in June 2025. Not only did he have an incredible first month at the plate (.323/1.045 in 31 at-bats), it was just obvious that he was a vibes guy who breathed some life into the clubhouse.
And his performance was deeply refreshing to fans after we'd watched Andy Ibáñez flounder through the first two months of the season. Ibáñez had always been the Tigers' tried and true lefty killer, but he was hitting .238 with a .681 OPS against lefties by the time he was optioned to Triple-A and Jones was called up.
Jones ended up hitting .288 with a .970 OPS against lefties in 2025 but, maybe more importantly, he slugged as a pinch-hitter: .485 with two home runs and five RBI.
His role was always clear. He was there to do what Ibáñez wasn't anymore at the plate, but Jones has never been good enough defensively to be more than a liability in the outfield. The Tigers either started him at DH or AJ Hinch got to do his favorite thing: play matchups.
There was really no question Jones would make the 2026 roster in the same capacity. But now he, too, is failing to get the job done. He's batting just .172 with a .571 OPS against lefties and .182/.598 as a pinch-hitter, and he has just one hit in his last 27 at-bats.
Tigers might need to rethink Jahmai Jones' place on the roster if struggles continue
Jones pinch-hit for Colt Keith in the bottom of the sixth on Sunday. The bases were loaded with two outs, and Mariners lefty José Ferrer was on the mound with zero control (all three runners on were put there by walks). A situation like this should've been Jones' bread and butter.
He made contact with a hanging sinker but didn't hit it remotely hard enough, and it died in center field to get the Mariners out of the inning unscathed.
Of course, fans' complaints end up being directed not only at the player but the manager, and Hinch's decisions to keep trotting Jones out have been incredibly dubious. Sure, Jones' previous performance says he should do well against lefties, but nothing he's done this year has indicated he still has that ability in him.
The Tigers seem to love Jones, and they're low on righty bats as it is, but something may have to give soon if he doesn't shape up.
