Jake Rogers traded again on deadline day in Orioles’ blockbuster Adley Rutschman deal

Less than a week after being traded by the Detroit Tigers to the Baltimore Orioles, veteran catcher Jake Rogers has another new team.

Hopefully he didn’t unpack his bags in Baltimore because he’s reportedly involved in one of the biggest trades at the MLB deadline.

Rogers was part of a deal that sent star catcher Adley Rutschman to the Boston Red Sox for a slew of players. He’s now packing his bags for the third time in a week after being DFA’d by the Tigers, traded to the Orioles, and now traded to the Red Sox.

After spending 2019-2026 in Detroit, these quick changes have probably put Rogers’ mind in a bit of a blender, but hopefully Boston is the last stop for a little while.

With Rutschman currently on the injured list and the Red Sox trading catcher Carlos Navaez to the Orioles in the deal, Rogers is going to have to step up and play a healthy role. There’s no expected return date from the injured list for Rutschman after some wrist inflammation that flared up in mid-July, but it's assumed he’ll return sooner than later.

Boston wouldn’t have made the deal if they expected to lean heavily on Rogers and Connor Wong for over a month. Either way, Rogers is likely to get some run with the Red Sox early on.

Although he wasn’t the everyday catcher that he hoped to become in Detroit, Rogers still holds a special place in Tiger fans’ hearts.

He was around for some of the worst years in franchise history and was able to help return Detroit to the playoffs with some truly memorable seasons. His best year came in 2023 when he was the catcher for one of the most exciting young teams in baseball. He hit .221 with 21 home runs and 49 RBI. His average wasn’t the best, but Rogers had a knack for clutch hits en route to the start of the franchise’s turnaround.

Although he slid into a No. 2/3 catcher role when Dillon Dingler broke out, he still had a solid role on the team, and when he was around spirits were always up.

Rogers was the lead catcher in 2024, but with his offensive numbers dipping, the team had to make a change and AJ Hinch went with Dingler. He’s still one of the most popular backup catchers that Tigers fans can remember, and he’s going to be a fun watch for Red Sox fans.
