Tigers' rookie Jackson Jobe has had a bit a rocky start to his season, but his last two starts have made it look like he's settling into his role. He took the bump for the Tigers-Blue Jays Rivalry Weekend finale on Sunday and made his second quality start of the season, pitching six innings and giving up just two runs while the offense put up three in support.
It wasn't quite as dominant as his April 12 start against the Twins, when he threw six innings and gave up just one hit, but it hinted that he's leveling back out nicely after getting a little beat up by the Rockies during the Tigers' road trip and giving up five walks on May 12.
He struck out five batters on Sunday, but the biggest highlight was a nasty sinker to Bo Bichette to end the third inning. Jason Benetti couldn't contain his astonishment at the pitch and had the perfect call, as always.
"Oh my goodness! A lightning bolt directly at Bichette. That'll activate your nervous system. [...] Anybody have an exorcist?"

Jackson Jobe’s devilish slider helped make Tigers history (and left Jason Benetti in awe)
With the Tigers' win that day (all thanks to Spencer Torkelson, who was responsible for driving in all three of Detroit's runs), Jobe became "the first pitcher in Tigers history to have the team win each of his first eight career starts."
Of course, the offense also has to be credited for that stat. While Jobe gave up six runs to the Rockies, the lineup provided eight to power them to a win. Still, that start was an outlier, and Jobe hasn't given up more than three runs in any of his other starts this year. The Tigers seem to be giving him a longer leash accordingly; he threw 90 pitches against the Blue Jays and 100 in his preceding start.
Jobe may be fighting for his roster spot here, given Alex Cobb's progression from hip inflammation that forced him to start the season on the IL, but Jobe slowly making it look like the Tigers would be making a massive mistake to uproot him in favor of Cobb. If he can weaponize pitches like that sinker and his changeup, which was responsible for two of his other strikeouts on Sunday, and put up a couple more solid starts before Cobb is ready to come back, sending Jobe back to Triple-A will be out of the question.
