Kevin McGonigle hasn't even played a game at Triple-A yet, but he already looks like a player who could make an impact for the Detroit Tigers at the Major League level.

McGonigle, the Tigers' top prospect and the No. 2 prospect in all of baseball according to MLB Pipeline, has excelled across three levels of Detroit's farm system this year. He started the season at High-A West Michigan, where sprained his right ankle in his season debut. After missing nearly seven weeks, he completed a rehab assignment at Single-A Lakeland and was activated in late May.

At High-A this season, McGonigle hit .372 with a 1.110 OPS in 171 plate appearances. He racked up 19 doubles and seven homers while drawing 23 walks against just 19 strikeouts. This performance earned him a July call-up to Double-A Erie, where he has arguably looked even better than he did in West Michigan.

Through 20 games at Double-A, McGonigle is slashing .267/.388/.567, and his walk rate has gone up from 13.5% to 17%. He boasts above-average speed on the base paths, and his bat may have already put him on the Tigers' radar as a candidate to make the 2026 Opening Day roster.

The precedent set by Colt Keith – the Tigers' top offensive prospect at the time of his signing in 2024 – could set the stage for McGonigle to sign a contract extension in Detroit before he even makes his Major League debut, virtually guaranteeing him a spot on the 2026 Opening Day roster.

McGonigle's promotion to the Majors will ultimately depend on the Tigers' roster needs and flexibility, particularly up the middle. He has played almost exclusively at shortstop, one of the most demanding positions on the diamond, so how he handles adjustments to defensive challenges will also go a long way in determining his viability at the Major League level.

New contract or not, all signs point to McGonigle being one of the best bets in the Tigers organization to reach the big leagues in 2026 – quite possibly, as part of the Opening Day roster if he has a strong spring training. McGonigle offers a combination of high upside, offensive polish and long-term control that the Tigers will want on the field as soon as he's ready.
