The Detroit Tigers finally gave fans the answer they’d been waiting for — and they only needed two words to do it.
“It’s time.”
With those two words on social media, the Tigers officially confirmed that top prospect Kevin McGonigle has made the Opening Day roster, ending months of speculation and igniting a wave of celebration across the fanbase.

McGonigle, the No. 37 overall pick in 2023, entered pro ball with questions about his long-term defensive home. Many evaluators projected a move off shortstop. Instead, the 21-year-old spent spring training silencing doubts, showing he can handle the position while continuing to flash one of the most advanced bats in the minors.
The 21-year-old will break camp with Detroit after batting .250/.411/.477 this spring with two homers, two doubles, a triple, two steals and more walks (11) than strikeouts (9) in 56 plate appearances. He is not on the Tigers’ 40-man roster, so they will need to make a corresponding transaction when they formally select his contract.
McGonigle's elite contact skills, disciplined approach, and poise at the plate already looked big-league ready. Now, his glove has caught up. For a Tigers team leaning into its youth movement, this is more than a roster decision. It’s a statement.
Tigers fans dreaming of next Kevin McGonigle decision after Opening Day roster move
The celebration over McGonigle making the Opening Day roster barely had time to breathe before Tigers fans began moving on to the next question:
How do you keep him in Detroit for the long haul?
By promoting him immediately, the Tigers have officially started the clock on his six years of team control, setting him up to hit free agency after the 2031 season—right as he enters his age-27 prime. For a player with his advanced hit tool and rapidly improving defense at shortstop, that’s the kind of timeline that can lead to a franchise-altering payday… potentially somewhere else.
That’s why the conversation around McGonigle is already shifting toward an extension.
Right now, the Tigers are in a narrow window where they still hold some leverage. A pre-debut or early-career deal could push free agency back a year or two, buying out prime seasons before his value fully explodes.
Of course, there’s risk on both sides. An early extension would eliminate eligibility for Prospect Promotion Incentive rewards, while waiting too long could embolden McGonigle to bet on himself in free agency.
With CBA uncertainty looming, the Tigers don't have much time to celebrate the present before they have to start worrying about locking down the future.
