After the shocking trade that saw the Boston Red Sox deal Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants, the rest of Major League Baseball has been left wondering what's next. The Detroit Tigers are expected to be among the most aggressive buyers ahead of the trade deadline next month, and they have ties to the drama that unfolded between Devers and the Red Sox.
Before Alex Bregman signed with the Red Sox, it seemed that the Detroit Tigers were in a prime position to land the former Houston Astros' third baseman. Even Bregman, before Boston's last-minute increase to their offer, thought he was headed to the Tigers. Had Bregman joined the Tigers, chances are, the drama that led to Devers' divorce with the Red Sox would never have happened.
Well, in only the annoying fashion that he can, Ben Verlander is trying to breathe new life into the rumors connecting Bregman to the Tigers. As we were in the final days of Bregman's free agency during the offseason, Verlander was an annoying presence for Tigers fans. Each day, he obnoxiously proclaimed that it was a great day for the Tigers to sign Bregman.
Well, in the aftermath of Devers being traded, Verlander is starting the movement once again ... but this time for a trade.
Today is a great day for the Detroit Tigers to trade for Alex Bregman

Ben Verlander trying to connect Tigers to Alex Bregman just isn't "it"
Bregman is certainly impacted by Devers' departure from the Red Sox, but not because of the fact that he may be traded. By all accounts, despite moving Devers, the Red Sox are intent on adding at the deadline and contending for a postseason berth. It shouldn't need to be said, but given Verlander's odd presence, here we are. The Red Sox are not going to be trading Bregman at the deadline, and, in fact, it seems more likely that they will sign him to a contract extension with Devers no longer being a part of the roster.
Of course, regardless of what happens with the Red Sox, it seems that the Tigers will be in the market for a third baseman ahead of the deadline. It's more likely that a reunion with Eugenio Suarez is more in the direction of where the Tigers may be headed. Simply out of principle, the Tigers are not giving up assets for Bregman when they offered him more money than the Red Sox. He can waste away in Boston for all anybody cares.
