It's been a disappointing season for the Detroit Tigers so far, but just to make matters worse, the Cleveland Guardians are somehow ahead of Detroit in the standings despite having a worse run differential.
As recently as June 20, the two teams were identical in run differential, with each having scored 309 runs and allowed 315 runs. Entering play on Wednesday, the Tigers have scored 322 runs and allowed 326 for a -4 run differential while the Guardians have scored 316 runs while allowing 325 runs for a -9 run differential.
The Tigers currently have a 34-45 record while the Guardians are at 41-39. It's frustrating, but run differential doesn't necessarily equate to wins, especially if those runs aren't spread out all that evenly.
Yet, this fact should at least give fans hope that the season is far from over. Detroit is just 6.5 games back of the Guardians and 7.5 behind the Chicago White Sox in the American League Central standings, while being just five games out of the final Wild Card spot in the AL.
That's absolutely nothing when one thinks back to the 2025 Guardians, a team that was 15.5 games back on Detroit in the standings as of July 6th and still went on to win the division. For as trying as this season has been for Detroit, there is still hope.
Tigers need a few things to go their way to get back in playoff hunt
Obviously, the Tigers need to get healthy first and foremost. That is a given, since one could argue they'd be much closer to a .500 team had they been a bit more fortunate on the injury front.
The team has momentum right now after sweeping the White Sox, and they have to build upon that. If they can close the gap even further by the Aug. 3 trade deadline, they can convince the front office to hold onto ace Tarik Skubal and actually go out and make some additions to the roster.
With Justin Verlander's return seeming unlikely, they could go out and add a starter to beef up the rotation a bit. What about a reunion with San Francisco Giants starter Robbie Ray, who made his big league debut with Detroit?
The lineup has come on strong as of late, but maybe they could add another bat into the mix to try to guard against some of the offensive swoons the team has had.
It's been a trying year, but the fact that the Tigers are actually better than the Guardians in terms or run differential should give them hope that this season is a long way from being over.
