2 Detroit Tigers stars make Bleacher Report's All-Breakout Team
The Detroit Tigers have surprised many this season as their second-half surge has propelled them to a playoff spot. They have been the hottest team in the American League since the All-Star Break, especially during the past month.
Many players have proven their worth during this stretch, but none more than the two named to Bleacher Report's All-Breakout Team for 2024.
The All-Breakout Team had a lot of star-caliber names on it this year. Former top prospects like Joey Bart and Jurickson Profar made it. Newer household names such as Jarren Duran and Elly De La Cruz made the cut. Some resurgent players like Seth Lugo, Hunter Greene and Michael King make up most of the rotation. Who did the Tigers have on this squad?
Outfielder Riley Greene was named one of the three outfielders on the team. He joins the previously mentioned Duran and Profar. The nomination was well deserved. Greene was named an All-Star for the first time this season and has shown steady progression throughout the past three seasons.
Another big step for Greene was that he stayed healthy most of the year. In doing so, he has accumulated the fourth most WAR (5.3) amongst MLB outfielders. He trails only Juan Soto (7.6), Jarren Duran (8.4) and Aaron Judge (9.8). How about that company?
Greene has been on a yearlong tear, slashing .262/.350/.483 and has slugged a team-leading 24 home runs. There is no doubt that Riley has taken the reigns as the face of the franchise from a hitter's perspective, and the next guy is that from the pitching side.
Starting pitcher Tarik Skubal was also deservedly named to the All-Breakout Team. Skubal is well on his way to winning the American League Cy Young Award and receiving a hefty payday down the road. The left-hander has been lights out this year. He regularly touches triple-digits on the radar gun and has a changeup that would make Harry Houdini's mouth drop.
Skubal is on pace to also win the American League Triple Crown, something that hasn't been done in a full season since Justin Verlander in 2011. His league-leading 18 wins, 2.39 ERA and 228 strikeouts are incredible. His 0.92 WHIP is second, behind only Logan Gilbert of the Seattle Mariners. Skubal is talent the Tigers have not seen since Michael Fulmer won the American League Rookie of the Year in 2016. There are not enough ways to emphasize the importance of a true ace, and the Tigers have found theirs.
The Tigers have impressed many people this year and the attention is starting to bring traction to the team. They are being recognized for their efforts. That is a huge confidence boost for young players who want to feel and realize they belong. Congratulations to these players who should have bright, long-term futures in the Motor City.
