As thrilling as the Tigers have been to watch in October so far, one key presence through the regular season has been sidelined during their postseason run. It's not ant of their players, though. It's Jason Benetti, who endeared himself to Tigers fans almost immediately after taking over as their daily play-by-play commentator on Bally Sports Detroit.
He's been replaced by a rotating cast of voices on various networks; during the Wild Card it was Michael Kay, and for the ALDS it's been Brian Anderson.
But Tigers fans do still have an ever-faithful, Detroit guy to turn to. Dan Dickerson is still calling games on 97.1, and he was there on Monday, during Game 2 of the ALDS, a pivotal match for the Tigers as they looked to even up the series before taking it back to Detroit.
Kerry Carpenter got to play the hero in the top of the ninth, with the Guardians' All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase on the mound. Clase had already stumbled a bit, giving up two back-to-back singles. But he'd also gotten two outs, so Carpenter was the Tigers' offense's last hope.
And Carpenter, who had a 20-homer season in 2023 and got close to that benchmark this season despite missing a lot of time on the IL, rose to the occasion. He shot a hanging splitter on a fly ball to center field. Dickerson, on the radio call, could hardly contain himself, and he probably blew out a few speakers on the way. His "And. It's. GONE!" and the following incredulous laugh was muddled by static, but it was perfect for the moment.
Dan Dickerson destroys speakers everywhere with his call on Kerry Carpenter's HR to win ALDS Game 2 for Tigers
You could basically hear Dickerson rising out of his seat as the ball traveled over the heads of Cleveland's outfielders and into the stands. You are all of us, Dan Dickerson.
Beau Brieske went on to close the game shut with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth. His last strikeout included a somewhat questionable third-strike call from the home plate ump, but we'll take it. No complaints here.
Dickerson has been calling Tigers games for almost 25 years, and he's seen this team through epic highs and lows. But this year's squad might be one of the most exciting ever; these are the Gritty Tigs, the comeback kids. They deserved a hometown guy calling that home run to speak for all of the fans who couldn't make it to the game, and that's exactly what they got.
